SHADES OF BROWN

I love earth colors but brown is usually a color hat gets the back seat in my wardrobe.

I told myself not to talk about the weather at all, but it’s inevitable because what one wears is pretty much determined by the weather. If it rains, you know, a trench coat and an umbrella comes in handy. If it's a hot summer day, a dress or top that’s light and flowy is highly recommended, you wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a Ski suit unless you are mad! If it's a cold winter day, an Eskimo like ensemble is a must. Those are my most dreaded days. Bundling up to stay warm. The past week or so we've been having an arctic blast all through the country. It's the kind of blast that makes you wish you could take a vacation to a tropical island. ASAP!!

 UGHHHHH!!!

It was soo cold it felt like we were in the middle of winter and its only fall. The thought of winter just makes me cringe.

Well, today the sun is out. It’s almost 72 degrees. Let’s throw a party!!!!

Am serious!!! Ok... I guess I'm a little excited.

I love earth colors but brown is usually a color that gets the back seat in my wardrobe. Today, I decided to show it love. I paired pieces with a little brown here and there then added the burgundy hat to add that pop of color.

CURBSIDE

Oh the excitement!!!!!

I was at the airport ready to head out to Jamaica this past weekend with my friends so Keziah and I decided to take quick outfit pic...

It was cloudy and rainy but the weather didn't  faze me.  A comfy outfit for a 3 hour flight to the tropical Island were my go to tomys, jeans, and a  simple black top.

NEW LOOK

Change. Sometimes it is hard to welcome change with open arms, especially when you are so comfortable with how things are.  In my case, I embraced a different kind of change.

And got my hair braided!!! I have'nt braided my hair in five years!! Woah!!!

I made up my mind, called in for my hair appointment and here we are!!

It’s been 2 weeks since my last outfit post so lets do a little catching up. After my trip from Oklahoma, I came back home to run the Fredrick half marathon which am happy to say I completed it. A good 13.1 miles!!! It’s the third half marathon I have ever done. I did the first two in 2012. I started running with an amazing group of ladies who wanted to get fit, later we wanted to run with a purpose so we founded a foundation called Hope for Fistula. Our mission is to eradicate Obsteric Fistula in Kenya and hopefully across Africa. This condition occurs as a result of complications during childbirth and affects thousands of women in Sub-Saharan Africa. For more details on this wonderful organization please check out hopeforfistula.org and also on facebook @hopeforfistulafoundation.

The following weekend of May 10th, I did the Warrior Dash on a rainy Saturday morning. Warrior Dash is a race where you  get to run 3 miles on a muddy terrain and that’s not it, you have to go over military like obstacles!!  Think shuffling under barbed wires on a muddy pit, pulling yourself up on a rope as you maneuver a steep slope, crawling through tunnels, and other grueling obstacles. All in all, my friends and I finished the race and had so much fun doing it. The music was great, the crowd was hype, the Dj had us dancing to dancehall at the after race party covered in mud without a care in the world.

I always use the mantra if you look good, you feel good and if you feel good, you definitely look good. Staying fit and healthy is fundamental to me. The best part is I get thrilled knowing I challenged myself to do something and I DID it.

Challenge yourself one of this days and do something new, or try a new look. Trust me, it changes your whole perspective. :)

For today’s outfit, I donned a printed, flowy dress I'd made a couple of years ago while in college.I paired it with a gold sweater, gladiator heels, and my "got to" red bag.

WHITE JEANS AND MINT FLATS

I relocated from Oklahoma to Maryland five years ago and it was quite a massive change for me as you can imagine. This past weekend, I went back to Oklahoma for the first time since the move. I was so excited about this particular trip mostly because it felt like going back home after a long duration of time. Flo and I were visiting our dear friend Becca who is a friend to the family and like a sister to me. The thought of seeing familiar faces that I hadn’t seen in a long time had me all ecstatic.

Seeing that I hadn’t done an airport look in a while, I decided to sneak in a few quick pictures as Flo and I were waiting for our flight.  Carrie Bradshaw, (Sarah Jessica Parker’s character on Sex and the City) was my favorite character on the show. I still enjoy watching reruns whenever possible. I fondly remember her saying that she will never be the woman with the perfect hair who can wear white and not spill on it.

That’s one of my biggest scares when wearing white, spilling on it, getting it stained! The horror!!! Yikes!! As to the hair, I've had my days, where’s the fun if everything’s perfect right?

Thankfully, my white jeans came through unscathed. I paired them with a floral top and mint flats that were comfortable enough for walking around the airport.

BLUE JEANS

“Jeans represent democracy in fashion.” Giorgio Armani (Fashion Designer)

“Don’t trust the scale, trust your jeans.” Unknown

“Blue Jeans are the most beautiful thing since the gondola” The late Diana Vreeland (former Editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue)

And my all time fave…

“I wish I had invented the Blue Jeans. The most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed, and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity - All I hope for in my clothes.” – Yves Saint Laurent (Fashion Designer)

The Late Yves Saint Laurent summed up everything on Blue Jeans. They come in different washes and style, and they are a classic. A must have wardrobe staple. I have yet to meet someone who does not like a pair of blue jeans. I, too, wish I'd invented the Blue Jeans….

Grab a cup of tea because I have a little story.  Long time ago, 1853 to be exact, there was a young guy named Levi Strauss. He was a German immigrant who decided to leave New York for San Francisco with the intention of selling dry goods. When a prospective buyer asked him what he was selling, Levi said he had canvas for tents and wagon covers. The buyer indicated he should have brought pants, since the ones they had never seemed to last.

After a few google searches (back in 2014) I discovered that 1853 was the Gold Rush Era in Frisco. Lots of miners wearing pants that don’t last??

Light bulb moment for young Levi!!!

He started making pants for the miners in canvas, they loved the pants, but they were not comfortable to wear due to chaffing. Young Levi decided to substitute the canvas with “ serge de Nimes” A twilled cotton cloth that came from France, first made in the city of Nime. Eventually, Levi Strauss and Company was born, the fabric was later known as denim, and the pants referred to as ‘blue jeans’

Over the years, the blue jeans have evolved in many different colors and a name for every style. Baggy Jeans, Boot-cut jeans, Flared jeans, Straight –leg jeans, Mummy jeans, Skinny jeans… the list is endless!

Then along comes my distressed pair of blue jeans. My sister Flo, her best friend Val, and I were in Massanutten, Virginia this past weekend. We had a good ol time trying out new things like Zip-lining and horse back-riding in the woods.

For this look, I decided to change things up from my usual clean, somewhat demure style, to more of an urban street flair. I paired by ‘blue jeans’ with a t-shirt and my now famous biker jacket as we headed out for dinner. I then added a faux fur stole to add some zsa zsa zsu to the outfit, the IT bag that’s debuting on here, and my comfy ‘afande’ boots. The snap back hat made the whole look come together, it was a gift from my friend Sophie, who is all about the Young Life.
